Living in Delhi with my parents during the transition of power meant that I missed many family gatherings and friend’s weddings but Nehru persuaded my parents that we should all go to Philip and Lilibet’s wedding, in order not to draw any more of the world’s attention to the continuing crisis developing in India. And so, on 9 November 1947, in spite of our great anxiety, we flew to London for a royal wedding.
