In February 1952 the Queen succeeded the throne on the death of her father, King George V1. She was in Kenya at the time and became the first sovereign in over 200 years to accede while abroad. My mother was there with her.

Two years ago to mark the 70th anniversary of that accession day I asked my mother to share some of her memories of those years with the Queen.

I am sharing the recording here now as the prelude to a new series of short stories we have FINALLY been able to jot down, which have been much anticipated!
