It was only a few months after Lilibet and Philip’s wedding that Gandhi was assassinated in January 1948.
Gandhiji as we knew him, had become a friend during our time in India, and the news came as a horrific, unfathomable shock. At first, I could not believe what I was hearing but the gravity of the announcer’s voice was unmistakable, I felt as if I had lost a member of my family.
In the hours to follow it felt as if the whole of India came to a complete standstill, everyone utterly stunned by the murder of the Father of the Nation.
