Zulus and Warriors
Bigger than rivalry. And felt straight through the chest.
Born in the 18th century, Junkanoo began as a few stolen days of freedom, when enslaved Africans danced, drummed, disguised themselves, and remembered who they were. No one really knows where the name comes from, was it John in a canoe who had the idea first? Or possibly and more probably, its name echoes the legend of a West African leader, likely to have been called John Canoe.
