My mother must be amongst only a few people who will have lived through three coronations. The first coronation was King George VI’s, she was deemed too young to be with her parents and elder sister in the Abbey but as she tells us here she watched the procession from Buckingham Palace, whilst waiting for the family to return and for the festivities that followed to begin.
As we look through her photograph album from that year, her scratchy eight year-old handwriting simply says ‘May 1937’. Of course, quite rightly, most of the photographs taken by her on that Coronation day were of the horses parading, as that is what captures the attention of little girls. Not Kings in crowns.
